Ruiz vaguely opens a metaphor-lead idea about the self as an actor on the stage of life. What happens when we step out of our 'character' and try being a genuine person? Ruiz has a good understanding of the work of professional actors and how the metaphor of their craft is germane to each person's life. Aren't we all acting all the time, in a sense? Aren't we improvising every day? Isn't 'acting' also a way of getting to the truth? How we see ourselves, how we perform as the "character" of ourselves, and how we can become our true selves unencumbered by the roles others have assigned us are really just a few portions of this book. Here, Ruiz takes on the archetype of "The Actor" and applies that to the reader's life and experiences. It's a "self help" book that I think anyone can relate to. I read this in short bursts over a couple of months and each paragraph gave me something I felt I needed to think more about. Ruiz manages to say things that are "big" in very simple ways.
They are, to me, personally truthful and helpful in their simple optimism and insight.
